This one is for Ricky who just started out playing Overwatch.
I'm BOTTOM 50% on McCree in the world.
I don't play McCree at all and if I ever picked it in ranked, my team would auto-lose.
But with consistent aim and good positioning I can get decent mileage on him in quickplay.
At a very basic level, positioning is the biggest factor when playing McCree second only to consistent aim.
There's no way I can write up about aiming but I can on positioning so:POSITIONING:
Unlike all other DPS heroes, McCree has no 'escape mechanism' in his kit.
He walks into a fight. He walks out of a fight. McCree can only walk around slowly.
But at the same time, he is a hitscan DPS who needs line of sight to damage enemies.
This is why positioning is unforgiving for a McCree player.
You cannot be at the wrong place at anytime yet you need to constantly be shooting at enemies to be useful.
A McCree who walks around the map hardly ever shooting at anybody is useless to the team.
If you charge in frontline you die, too far back and you're not contributing much.
1 - McCree is not
a frontline brawler. Top 10% in the world can do it but in general, the average player shouldn't play him that way.
2 - ALWAYS escort your Tank. This is the rule and should very rarely be broken.
3 - McCree is Anti-Flanker. Be available to save your healers from flankers.
4 - McCree is not a flanker. You don't try to look for 'smart moves' or to out maneuver your opponents. Stick with your Tank even if it feels predictable.
5 - Bait your team. This is the McCree way. The enemy should always be shooting at someone else in-front of you and never AT you directly.
6 - If the enemy ever shifts focus on you, it means you are out of position.
7 - If the enemy jumps on you and you have no way out, you will die. Again, that means you are out of position.
8 - 90% of the time, you should be one Roll (Shift key) away from safety. You don't have to fight from behind cover but you should always be near one.COMBOS:Stun Kill
E + Left Click Headshot
Your flashbang has very short range. Stuns only last for 1 second.
Throw some around before a match starts to memorize how far the flashbang flies.
When stunned, enemy goes into a special animation where they stick their head up prominently.Tank Buster
Right Click + Shift + Right Click
secondary fire unloads your entire clip while shift instantly reloads your gun allowing for a second volley.
Damage dealt will kill Winston and deMechs DVa. Use it point blank range because the recoil on right click is extreme.
When to use Ultimate (Q)
- There is no right or wrong way to use your ultimate, Deadeye.
- Personally if I feel I can kill atleast one healer I will use it.
Mechanics to your ultimate takes a while to get used to. It basically has a 'lock-on' time. The more HP the enemy has the longer it takes to lock on for a full kill. A red skull indicates that the target has been fully locked on. You can fire it early but doing less dmg.
Overall - McCree is probably THE best DPS hero to learn Overwatch because of the higher requirement on correct positioning.
It teaches you how you can die easily and cultivate a better sense of survival instinct.
Also, McCree's positioning is heavily dependent relative to his tanks + supports which helps you understand those roles better compared to when playing other DPS.
